Cats & Teenagers

For all of you with teenagers, you may want to know that one of the secrets to raising them is to realize they have a lot in common with cats:

1. Neither teenagers nor cats turn their heads when you call them by name, much less come when called.

2. No matter what you do for them, it is not enough. Indeed, all humane efforts are barely adequate to compensate for the privilege of waiting on them hand and foot. If you are waiting for "thank-yous", better settle
in (perhaps until they hit 20).

3. You rarely see a cat walking outside of the house with an adult human being, and it can be safely said that no teenager in his or her right mind wants to be seen in public with you.

4. Even if you tell jokes as well as Jay Leno, neither your cat nor you teen will ever crack a smile.

5. No cat or teenager shares your taste in music, and at times, they both seem to delight in making noises that set your teeth on edge (I'm not sure if it was cats or teens that were responsible for the origination of the term "caterwauling").

6. They both can lie on the living-room sofa for hours on end without moving, barely breathing.

7. Cats, it is said, have nine lives. Teenagers take risks as if they believe they do.

8. They both yawn in exactly the same manner, communicating that exquisite human ecstasy - a sense of complete and utter boredom with you and home life.

9. Cats' paws and teenagers' feet do not, shall we say, "improve" anyone's furniture.

10. They are both in to grooming, big time. They spend extended time to make sure their hair/fur is just right. At least the cats do not require expensive hair care products.

11. Cats that are free to roam outside sometimes have been known to return in the middle of the night to deposit a dead animal in your bedroom. Teenagers likewise (except for the dead animal part).

12. Cats are fastidious eaters, neat to a fault, and very picky about their food. Teenagers are..... alright, the comparison does not hold on all points!

Thus, if you must raise teenagers (and remember, most of us entered into this child raising business voluntarily, if with great ignorance), an excellent source of advice is veterinarians. It is also a good idea to keep a guidebook on cats at hand at all times.

And remember, above all else, put out the food they like and do not make any sudden moves in their direction.

When they make up their minds, in their own time, they will finally come to you for some affection and comfort, and it will be a triumphant moment for all concerned. If you listen carefully, you may even hear the purrs.
